Thanks to Diane C for forwarding the link below from NBC News Monday night (August 5) about a program called Sit Stay Read, in which low-income kids in school in Chicago get a chance to read to therapy dogs (and teachers see their reading skills, and their behavior, improve as a result.) In our area of New Jersey we are fortunate to have St. Hubert's and their Paws for People volunteer organization, which for a very small fee, provides our library with two volunteer therapy animals (and their people) the first Wednesday of every month. Kids can sign up to read to the dogs. What a wonderful program this is. I can't recommend it highly enough. |
