Public Libraries in the United States, 2007
The Institute of Museum & Library Services just released its report on usage of public libraries in the US during fiscal year 2007 - more about it here:
http://www.imls.gov/news/2009/063009.shtm

What I'm really interested in, though, is finding out whether library usage has increased as much as we think it has, during the tough economic times of 2008 and into 2009. Stay tuned... for a couple of years... to get that info.

Cap'n Ahab's Fine Seafood and other awesome PR ideas
This is a great article about how the Johnson County library system in Kansas is publicizing their library by decorating their delivery trucks. How cool is this? Not that expensive, too. And I bet it gives them lots of exposure... plus, it shows they have a sense of humor. Dang, I love it.

That's one way to get buzz for your library
Check out this article about the Huntington Library in Pasadena, CA, entitled

`Son of Stinky' ready to bloom at Huntington Library

Certainly an interesting way to get your library's name in the paper! :)

  Awful library books
What a great blog - includes pictures of books still on library shelves that should have been weeded looooooongg ago:

if you are not yet convinced that some of the books on your shelves really need to go, check out CREW weeding manual for libraries, online at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/pubs/crew/

And if you want an academic article on the pros and cons of weeding, check out: http://www.moyak.com/papers/weeding-books-libraries.pdf

As for me, I'll continue to make the hard choices about whether we still need to keep books with titles such as Everybody into the kitchen with Tuna! or Fun Recipes with your Amana Radar Range or Prozac: The Latest in Antidepressant Depression Therapy.

Meanwhile, if you come across a title that you think might be one of the most awful ones out there, please consider posting it to the Awful Library Books Blog. If nothing else, it provides a chuckle to those of us who weed.

Fascinating article on ebooks and how they'll change the way we read
Here's a really neat article from the Wall Street Journal about ebook readers and how they change the way we interact with books. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123980920727621353.html

From my own experiences owning a Kindle, I can say that I agree with a lot of the author's points!

It will be interesting to watch and see what happens with ebook readers (and with libraries) over the next several years.

Today's NYT Crossword Puzzle (April 12, 2009) features the following clue: 113D: "Natl. Library Card Sign-up Month." And hey! I knew the answer! SEPT.!

Thank you, New York Times, for helping to pimp libraries.

Why I should feel guilty for loving my Kindle
This article from the Christian Science Monitor has some really good points about the dangers of the Amazon Kindle. http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0318/p09s01-coop.html

I read another article recently that warned if the publishing industry doesn't get on the stick and start demanding that ebooks be available in non-proprietary format, then Amazon will become the Apple iTunes of the e-book world.

And this may well be the case... and the Christian Science Monitor article was right on in all the things it said... but frankly, you can have my Kindle over my cold dead body. I love that thing. Even if it is kind of like consorting with the devil. Even though its user model is completely anathema to free public libraries. I love it.

And I must admit, it did cross my mind the other day -- if I die, can I bequeath my collection of Kindle books to someone else? I'm not sure. Will have to check the fine print of my agreement with Amazon.

"PIMP" Verb
